We have tried to offer a range of information which we feel will contribute to a better understanding of the Oil & Gas industry. There is a range of material available such as: articles related to the industry, instructional and general videos, glossaries, employment opportunities, among others.

This material will be updated regularly. Comments and suggestions are most welcome!

What safety training do I need to have in order to work offshore?

In order to enter an installation or vessel that is offshore you are required to have Basic Safety Training. This training has been developed to provide offshore personnel with the basic knowledge of survival in the event of an emergency that may occur at sea.

Not all countries will demand the same training programs in Offshore Survival. It will depend on the regulations that govern their countries, especially those that concern the Oil & Gas industry.

Those that are most common and that have approval in most countries are: OPITO and OLF, which are run by certified Offshore Safety Training centres/institutions.

OPITO (Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization) was created in the UK and sets high standards for Offshore training in general. OPITO Safety Training Certificates are recognized worldwide, so if you are thinking about entering the Offshore O&G work market make sure that the training center where you will take your survival training is OPITO certified.

In Norway, this certification is OLF and set standards for training and courses for offshore mainly on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Most installations, rigs and sub-sea vessels on the NCS demand that all personnel must have OLF approved safety training.

However, there is a mutual recognition agreement between countries that share the North Sea, and that states the training and courses that are valid in this area. Generally, it means that if you have OPITO approved safety training you are not necessarily required to do the training again with an OLF approved training centre. This may also depend from company to company in order to start working in the Norwegian continental shelf.
